Not to nitpick or anything…
I’ve recently found myself in a bit of a pickle…. a precarious situation if you will, and, not ignoring the fact that my life at the moment, is run by a chaotic bard who’s had too much caffeine and LSD to see the forest or the trees, I’ve come to the conclusion that I alone, am actually the bard, just sans the LSD.
The disturbing and chaotic political situation has really ensured that I feel little hope or safety here anymore, and my exit plan may have to take a front seat.
I was really looking forward to being able to cruise through the next few years, rent out my house, and live in the relative safety of any other country.
Although, now it seems, that that may take a different shape, and I’m inbetween decisions and thoughts on the mattter.
So where do I draw the line?
Personal safety? Economic Stability? Legal protections? All of the Above?
No part of the next four years is going to be easy… We’ve learned that from the last four, when he didn’t have a revenge agenda.
Those that keep intimating that we’ll be ok, really don’t understand the fear and unease of seeing a country like the US descend into a fascist dictatorship. Mainly because those are the same people whose ignorance and privilege allow them the luxury of being a-political, and usually uneducated. For those of us who have studied history, and in most cases lived through it, we see how the dismantling of the Administrative state, the legal state, and the defiance of court orders pushes us towards a Autocracy one Executive Order at a time.
I’m not saying we are doomed, far from it. But the last barrier to this fight against Fascism must include the special elections in Florida, and it absolutely must involve the courts. Senate Republicans have already abdicated their duties and responsibilities, and the supreme court is already in the pocket of the Billionaire class. The rest of us, have no representation.
We the People? Half of the people don’t care… The apathy and purity politics, misogyny, racism and xenophobia took control because of carefully crafted messaging from both sides that discouraged voters from showing up.
The fact is, that We the people, is an aphorism for rich, entitled, cis-het, white men, and that the true people are a fractious, uncoordinated and easily manipulated bunch. “We The People” have never been the masses, “We the People” has always been the classes. Those amongst us who have a small amount of security and a moderate amount of safety, have the privilege of being able to survive the onslaught and assault on civil rights. But that’s only because we are next, not because we are favored under the new regime.
Be safe, stay safe, and ensure you have the resources to make the leap if you can.
